POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the SCL Director, the SCL registered nurse will oversee and ensure safe and proper medication administration to LifeSkills participants. The SCL RN will also provide primary monitoring and consultant functions (including on-call supports) for ensuring that LifeSkills’ participants and staff have the best health possible.

OTHER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Learn, teach, abide by, and uphold all SCL/DDID/LifeSkills and KBN regulations and policies (as well as other applicable state and federal laws) pertaining to medication administration and other health and medical supports provided to SCL participants.

  2. Provide initial and update training to LifeSkills’ staff on medication administration, seizures, blood borne pathogens, and other related health and medical support procedures (i.e., blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing) at least monthly and more often as needed/requested.

  3. Ensure and collaborate with PRN reviews for the Review of all Michelle P Waiver assessments.

  4. Serve on the DSD Quality Assurance Committee, the Regional Human Rights Committee, and the Regional Behavioral Intervention Committee, providing professional consultation regarding issues related to medication administration and individual health, safety, and welfare.

  5. Serve as a LifeSkills’ liaison with psychiatrists, physicians, pharmacists, and other medical professionals as needed to assist with obtaining prescriptions and other required documents and instructions related to individual health and safety needs.

  6. Collect and review medication error incident reports, medication administration records, and other documents related to medication administration, health, safety, and welfare, and complete/submit reports (i.e., monthly medication error report) as required by DDID/SCL regulations and SCL Director’s request.

  7. Perform chart audits by reviewing health and safety related documents (i.e., physical exams, labs reports, seizure logs, blood pressure/sugar logs, etc.) and provide proper follow-up/consultation for ensuring best practices related to individual health and safety.

  8. Monitor medication administration practices and make recommendations as needed to ensure quality and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies and procedures.

  9. Review, revise, and produce medication administration records (between 25 and 75 documents per month), ensuring quality, individual safety, and compliance with all laws, guidelines, policies, and regulations pertaining to medication administration.

  10. Provide on-site staff monitoring and training related to medication administration and medical issues, to include site visits to contractor homes, Edgewood and DT sites.

  11. Work collaboratively with other support team members as needed to develop training and supports for ensuring/improving individual health, safety, and welfare.

  12. Provide direct health care supports, in keeping with the legal scope and responsibility of a registered nurse, to LifeSkills participants and staff as needed.

  13. Perform initial HRST assessments for incoming SCL participants and updates as needed.

  14. Complete TB assessments for all SCL staff as required by SCL regulations.

  15. Provide on-call, over the phone, response (returning calls within 30 minutes) and consultation regarding staff questions/concerns related to medication errors and other medical issues, 7 days week/24 hours per day (excluding vacation requests as approved by the SCL Director).

  16. Ensure individuals’ rights are respected and individuals are free from any and all types of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
